Chapter 12 â Carmilla
I watched Jake sleep, his head heavy in my lap, while the ridiculous show continued playing on the television. The sky outside grew lighter, but his blackout curtains were indeed effective - only the thinnest strips of dawn light crept around the edges.
Mr. Whiskers kept watch with me, his yellow eyes occasionally meeting mine in silent communication. He understood what I was and what Jake was becomingâthe gradual awakening of an old soul in a new form.
The hunters on the screen were now attempting to track a vampire using completely inaccurate methods. I reached for the remote with my free hand, careful not to disturb Jake, and turned the volume lower.
"They're doing everything wrong, aren't they?" I whispered to Mr. Whiskers. "No self-respecting vampire would leave such obvious traces. And that tracking spell? Pure nonsense."
The cat blinked slowly in agreement.
Jake stirred slightly, mumbling something that sounded like Latinâan old protection charm he used to recite. My fingers continued their gentle path through his hair, soothing him back to a deeper sleep.
His apartment told so many stories about who he was in this life. The astronomy books were pure Edmund, but they sat next to modern physics texts and sci-fi novels. His coffee table held both a laptop and hand-drawn star charts. Even his clothes - the jacket he'd offered me earlier hung by the door - mixed modern practicality with subtle elegance.
A phone buzzed somewhere in the room - his, not mine. I located it on the kitchen counter and, after a moment's hesitation, checked the screen. A message from Sarah.
"Jake, please call me. I'm worried. Something's not right about her."
I deleted the message before it could show as read.
My hand tightened around the phone, anger rising like a tide. How dare she? After everything she'd seen, after the clear warnings I'd given... Sarah still thought she had any right to interfere?
The possessiveness that had always been part of my nature - the part that had led me to slaughter entire families who'd threatened to separate us in our first life - roared to the surface. Jake was mine. Had always been mine. Would always be mine. In this life and any other.
My gaze fell on a ceramic mug sitting on the counter, some workplace gift with "World's Most Average Employee" printed on it. Without thinking, I snatched it up and hurled it at the wall. The crash as it shattered was deeply satisfying but not enough to quell the rage burning in my chest.
Jake jolted awake at the sound, nearly falling off the couch.
"What- what happened?"
Mr. Whiskers hissed, more at my display of temper than at any perceived threat.
"Carmilla?" Jake pushed himself up, blinking sleep from his eyes. "Are you okay?"
"No," I snarled, my fangs extending without my permission. "I am not okay. That insufferable, presumptuous little human-"
"Sarah?" He was fully alert now, reading my expression with the ease he'd always had. "What did she do?"
"She continues to interfere. To claim some right to protect you. From me!" I gestured at his phone, still clutched in my hand.
